Canada's first school of tea

The Tea Emporium is proud to have opened Canada’s first School of Tea over fourteen years ago. We are also incredibly proud to be the only tea company with TAC Certified Tea Sommeliers on staff. We have created a serene setting where we invite you to come and learn about the fascinating world of tea with all its rich history and flavours. We are very pleased to offer a new and revamped course selection, having divided our classes into ‘101 classes’ for those looking for an introduction into tea; and ‘master classes’ for those that are looking for a deeper knowledge on a subject. Take multiple classes and receive a discount. Also, don’t forget to ask us about group pricing.

MASTER CLASS - THE MIDDLE KINGDOM: CHINESE TEA CULTURE AND KUNG FU BREWING - 3PM

It is said that the real tea masters in China all drink either oolong or puerh…. The Tea Emporium is pleased to offer the opportunity to learn about these lesser known, but highly sought after teas. Students will learn about the different types of oolong and puerh, as well as the regions that produce these teas and their production methods. As well, experience the ancient tradition of the Chinese tea ceremony. Experience the art of Kung fu brewing (brewing with great skill) while you learn about Chinese tea traditions and culture. This master class involves a tea tasting flight of Green tea, Oolong tea and Black tea. Our instructor is a Certified TAC Tea Sommelier with the Tea Association of Canada who also studied tea in Sichuan China for 2 years. Come and enjoy the perfect “kung fu” cup…




MASTER CLASS - THE MIST ON THE HIMALAYANS: THE TEAS OF DARJEELING - 3PM

The beautiful region of Darjeeling is stunning and breathtaking and produces some of the most beautiful teas.  This master class is taught once a year, as we receive our shipment of First Flush Darjeeling teas.  Let us take you on a journey of discovery, production , history, and sensory evaluation. This workshop involves a flight of various first, and second flush Darjeeling teas. Come learn about the differences between first, second and third flushes and experience high quality single estate Darjeeling tea in all its splendor…




MASTER CLASS - THE WORLD OF BESPOKE: BLENDING AND TASTING - 3PM

Have you ever wanted to create your very own tea? Does your local tea shop not quite have exactly what you are looking for? . Do you like cinnamon? fruit? or flowers? Then this master class is for YOU! Students will learn about sensory development and how to professionally taste tea, as well as methods for blending and how to go about creating your very own custom cup. Blending and tasting is taught by the Tea Emporium’s very own Shabnam Weber, who has been developing custom blends and recipes for over 14 years…

MASTER CLASS - THE LAND OF INSPIRATION: RYU-REI JAPANESE TEA CEREMONY (TABLES AND CHAIRS) - 3PM

The Tea Emporium is proud to offer a ryu-rei style master class with Reid “So Shin” Burridge. Reid is an Urasenke tea master and instructor who has been involved with Japanese tea for over 30 years. He studied in Kyoto at the Midorikai School. Students will learn the philosophy and practice of tea in the ryu-rei style, this style utilizes tables and chairs, rather than kneeling on tatami mats. Experience harmony, respect, purity and tranquility as the four elements of cha dao, the way of tea. We proudly invite you to come and participate as an honoured guest…




101 CLASS - Tea and Food Pairing 12PM

How do you pair tea with food?  What flavours work together?  In this workshop, we'll walk you through the flavour profiles of various teas and pair them with cheese and chocolate.  You'll learn all about the difference between the rules of adaptation and contrast.  This class is taught by The Tea Emporium's owner, Shabnam Weber, the author and head instructor of the Tea Sommelier program in Canada.




TEA AND THE ART OF MEDITATION – 12PM

Tea has been a central part of meditation amongst Buddhist monks for centuries. This seminar will teach you the basics of meditation, focusing your mind and being present in the moment with tea.  We will talk about how to incorporate the simple art of meditation into your every day life.  This class is taught by The Tea Emporium's owner, Shabnam Weber, the author and head instructor of the Tea Sommelier program in Canada.
