We always strive for a balance in our lives – it is something we earn for naturally. May it be balancing our career, a home, family or love life, we desire harmony among things that define our existence. What we forget however, is that we also have a need for an inner balance.  The inner balance is crucial to our well being, yet many forget the importance of such equilibrium. This balance can be traced back to the classical thought of the four elements (earth, water, air, fire), reflecting the essential parts of everything in existence.  One form of an alternative medicine that follows a variation of the classical elements is the Ayurveda medicine native to the Indian subcontinent, which takes an approach of grouping any bodily substances into elements. Ayurveda stresses a balance of three elements in particular – wind, water and earth (Vata, Pitta, Kapha), also categorized under “doshas”, asserting that a human body possesses a combination of these elements which affect the body’s characteristics. Ayurveda urges each person to seek balance by fulfilling all three doshas in order to achieve overall harmony of the body resulting in a healthy life. Vata is needed for the healthy function on the nerveous system, Pitta for the stomach, bowel, liver, spleen, heart, eyes, skin, and Kapha relates to the carrier of nutrients. Keep in mind that there is much more to this concept and I urge you all to discover this method of approaching our inner imbalances. Sometimes our inner imbalance may reflect poorly on our external lives. So why not start from the inside? We can learn a lot from what our bodies are telling us, and I think it is important to listen. I also encourage you all to stop by any of our store locations and take our Ayurveda test to see which dosha you may be lacking. I guarantee, you will be pleasantly surprised!
