It’s been about two months since I transitioned from being a regular coffee drinker to a matcha drinker. Have I morphed from a frazzled mess into a someone who always exudes a Zen-like aura? Well, I’m not quite there yet, but here is a list of the very real benefits I have experienced:
1) Greater energy overall – I feel consistently energized throughout the day, even during hectic periods. I no longer experience the ups and downs that I had when I relied solely on coffee as my morning/afternoon energizer.
2) I’m definitely calmer. My mood is more even, even with the extra energy boost. The caffeine in matcha is balanced by greater than normal doses of L-theanine, which promotes a sense of well-being and has been proven to promote alpha-wave activity in the brain.
3) Matcha has helped me build my focus over the course of this semester. The even levels of energy, the ritual of matcha preparation and the brain-boosting properties of L-theanine have helped me study not harder, but smarter and better.
4) My skin looks brighter and more even-toned. I’ve lost a few pounds since I don’t get the afternoon energy dips I used to have, and thus haven’t felt the need to reach for a cookie (or two) at 4 pm every day. That last one is definitely not something I had anticipated but is a very welcome side-effect!
If you’re like me, and have decided to make matcha an every day ritual, it’s always a good idea to invest in a matcha bowl and whisk.
