Now how can you turn away from those words? We made a commitment very early on in our company to pay it forward whenever we could. And this summer we started with our ‘Rainbow Blend’ in June for Casey House and moved on to ‘Sunrise on Sparrow Lake‘ for Camp Winston.
I wanted to take a moment and tell you why we chose Camp Winston – and the truth is that the story can really best be told by one of our very own valuable team members at The Tea Emporium, Elyse Stewart. Elyse has been involved with Camp Winston for a number of years, first as a camper and now volunteering at the camp. Briefly, “Camp Winston’s primary focus is to set our children up for success. In most cases, this is the first time in their lives they feel welcome and secure enough to participate without being rejected or alienated by their peers.
Campers have a complex combination of neurological disorders which include:
- Autism Spectrum Disorders
- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
- Tourette’s Disorder
- Learning Disabilities
- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
- Oppositional Defiant Disorder
But the true value of Camp Winston are from Elyse herself:
I couldn’t imagine being the person I am without having attended this camp. They don’t just support the families with camp and retreats. This extends to actually helping the families at home. This camp gave me a chance to actually feel normal, and embrace my differences (which is very hard when they are thrown in your face in school).
Most of these kids are rejected or kicked out of other camps because they are violent, they couldn’t handle their behaviours or they are “too complex” (they have too many disorders).
I feel that the words of one family can sum up what Camp Winston has done for many families: “We couldn’t have made our family work without Camp Winston.”
Please join our team in supporting Camp Winston with the purchase of a delicious tea – Sunrise on Sparrow Lake – a fruit blend that is delicious hot or iced!
