The Matcha Journals

Hello everyone! This week and for the next few weeks to come we are going to have a series of guest posts written by a Tea Emporium staffer/student. Follow us in the coming weeks to read about her experimentation with matcha for the purposes of improving her energy levels, focus/concentration, health booster and ultimate skin care product.

Week 1 – Matcha as Energy Booster

It’s the first week of class and like my fellow students, I’m already inundated with piles or readings and assignments. Having traditionally relied on copious amounts of coffee (cue shock and horror amongst tea purists), I’ve been looking for a gentler, perhaps less jolting method of keeping up my energy levels. Since matcha is in fact a stone-ground Japanese green tea, it does contain caffeine (or teine, if we want to be technical), but also contains a whole host of other beneficial compounds, most notably L-theanine. L-theanine is an amino-acid linked to improved cognitive function, decreased anxiety and stress and improved moods. It is able to cross the blood-brain barrier and several studies have linked it to better performance on specific tasks. It is found naturally in plant foods, especially matcha, which contains several times more than a cup of regular brewed green tea. Obviously, for a student, or for anyone who needs to concentrate for a prolonged period of time, or even those of faced with demanding schedules, there is potentially huge benefit in making matcha drinking a ritual. Starting today I will be replacing my morning coffee with matcha and following that with more cup in the afternoon. Tune in next week to read about my results!Matcha
